From the Director’s Desk….

Welcome, to the Office of Data Governance (ODG) Newsletter!

By now, you might be asking yourself, what is data governance, how do I benefit, and what is the value proposition?  Allow me to explain.

In today’s world, we produce more data than ever before. The exponential amounts of data increasing daily is vast, and not slowing down.  So, how do we get meaningful business insight out of our data?

First, Data Governance value is a vital cog in an organization’s culture where accurate, useful and consistent data is regarded as a strategic asset for successful business. Simply put, quality data leads to better data-driven decisions.

At WashU, the Office of Data Governance (ODG) is leading the charge by taking action for planning, designing and the deployment of a sustainable, enterprise-wide Data Governance Program. As you can imagine, this is a tall order, with a broad and encompassing mission, yet critical towards improving data literacy and protecting the quality of WashU’s enterprise data.

One strategic outcome for our Data Governance Program is the ability to identify, define, and understand our data, to extract meaningful value. In parallel, the ODG will continue to lead the investment towards improving the narrative around the discipline and accountability for our data, while effectively communicating outcomes.  We will continue to weave data governance best practices into everyday responsibilities and leverage our Data Stewardship experts to lead both strategic and tactical commitments toward completion.

As we boldly navigate this journey together, WashU’s ability to adapt to change, proactively solve data challenges, elevate overall data literacy and embrace becoming a data-driven culture will be evolutionary as we move forward.

Remember… data governance is everyone’s responsibility!
