Collaboratively naming and defining business terms is central to the effort of data governance. A good definition will clearly name a data asset and differentiate it from all other assets. Making a definition descriptive, concise, free of ambiguity, and accessible to our WashU community.
Seek uniqueness: When writing a definition, consider the unique attributes and potential downstream impacts. These characteristics should be central to your definition.
Write correct and relevant definitions: Ensuring your definition is correct and current may require stewardship collaboration. Now is a wonderful time to review and ensure team alignment.
Use phrases like “is a”, “has a”, and “used for”: Definitions are stronger when they name the type of asset (“is a”), provide identifying characteristics of the asset (“has a”), and note the general function of the asset (“used for”).
